Alexandria is situated on the west verge of the Nile Delta, between the Mediterranean Sea and Mariut Lake. It is considered to be the second most important city and the main port in Egypt. It handles over three quarters of Egypt’s foreign trade. Port Alexandria consists of two harbors (East and West) separated by a T-shaped peninsula. General cargo is handled in the first part, while wood and bulk are handled in the second part. The East harbor is shallow and is not used for navigation. The West harbor is used for commercial shipping. The main harbor is then formed by two converging breakwaters.
